Thanks for your post. I stumbled on it myself while looking for databases of RFI's and RFP's. I do basically the same kind of job than you or David, for a software company in the Netherlands. I run in nearly exactly the same issues. Getting the RFI's is already difficult enough (and sometimes you have to pay for them). Paying to get RFI's for software that you are giving away for free is really frustrating. So when you say that you had it, I can feel your pain...

Anyway, thanks to David for the link So that I bring something useful to this conversation, I personally use Capterra to collect supply chain management and logistics related RFI's. The service is a paying one, but not very expensive (even for a small company like ours) and gives access to free RFI's in the domain you are covering. You have to pay a little bit for the other ones, but it is really not much and worth it, would it be only because it gives access to free information about what people need in the real world...

you are undoubtedly right, but then everyone seems to write books around there by exagerating the reach and validity of too small bits of logic out of any meaningful proportion. "The world is flat, "The end of History", "IT doesn't matter" and more last words. I don't know if it's the authors or the publishers, or both, but if it sells, that seems to be good enough for them.

Anyway, it sounds like you are pretty fed up with staying in the US. Alas, that is only because I am not there to go for dinner with you at the Buck's Camping & Fishing in DC, or something of the sort in NYC :-)

So give me a reason to come and visit (dang) !

Very interesting article. I have been to this great and wonderful city two times. This is one of my favorite cities to just wander around. It's generally very safe and clean, and the architecture of Gaudi among many other great Catalan architects, is wonderful to look at. I still have to meet the first person that has visited Barcelona and has not fallen in love with this city. Without a doubt this is the greatest place (with people in it) that I have visited so far.

This Symposium worked much better than the first Java.
1. We got free coffee and food, which we didn’t at JavaOne :-)
2. We didn’t have the same level of over crowding that we sometimes got at JavaOne sessions; so no sitting on the floor!
3. The reduced Barcelona numbers in attendance also means reduced numbers of vendors. This had the knock on effect that if we were between sessions, we might struggle to find something constructive to do with our time.

There are quite a few CMS/ECM projects in our database under the "software" or "web development" categories; a CMS can be anything from a document management system to a health information system to a case management and reporting system. True, the majority aren't your standard CMS for a basic website, but a CMS is a CMS no matter the size or shape.

RFPs are not for everyone, but if you cut yourself off from them, chances are that you're missing a lot of business opportunities. If word of mouth and printed mailers works for you, good for you!

I read your article, good points, but what would interest me is "best practise" how to deliver an RFP (and how to do so efficiently). Anyways, I believe that RFP's are not an efficient sales channel for me.

Maybe you're not effective in communicating your value to your potential customers. I understand your dilemma as I often am the one responding to RFPs for my company, a boutique firm in a crowded sector and have written an article about my luck in RFP resonses. My other advice: try the RFP Database

A very nice post here. While many workflow products have tools that help manage changing workflow applications (the one I work for included) such as: Creating backups of workflow application designs, versioning an alerting users that what they are changing may upset other depending workflows many people simply ignore all of this and just keep along creating and destroying workflow applications at the same time.
